The mouth is the opening through which we can take food and air. The mouth is also referred to as the oral cavity and it helps in the digestion process. It is made up of teeth, tongue, lips, cheeks, and salivary glands. With movement of the tongue, lips, and cheeks it produces a voice that is essential for communication.
The mouth is mainly divided into two parts vestibule and oral cavity. The vestibule is a part that lies in between teeth, lips, and cheeks. The oral cavity has alveolar bones which consist of tooth sockets that hold teeth in place at the sides and also in front, at the back of it isthmus of fauces is present which is part of the Oropharynx that extends from the soft palate.
The roof of the oral cavity is made of a hard palate at the front and a soft palate on the back side. The soft palate is known for having uvula a conic outgrowth that is present in just the center of the soft palate. The floor of the mouth has mylohyoid muscles which extend from the mandible to the hyoid bone and it is largely covered by the tongue.
Salivary glands produce secretions from mucous membranes, the tongue is lined by mucous membrane and also jaw on the inner side is lined by mucous membrane. The mouth is an opening referred to as orifice which is present between the upper and lower lip.
A male human mouth can occupy about 71.2 ml volume while a female mouth can occupy 55.4 ml volume. The human mouth has key vital roles to play like eating, drinking, speaking, and breathing.
